Our lawyer SEO services
People look for a lawyer by practice area and by city, rarely by firm name. Lawyer SEO therefore works on two fronts at once: your local presence in Google and a clear page for every area of law you practice.
Local SEO and your Google Business Profile
We structure your Business Profile: a precise primary category, secondary categories for your main practice areas, real hours, office photos and detailed services. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and popularity: your profile covers relevance; reviews and citations build popularity. We also align your firm's name, address and phone number (NAP) across legal and local directories.
One page per practice area
Family law, criminal defense, personal injury, immigration, employment law, estate planning: each area gets its own page, answering the first question a prospective client has and explaining how to book a consultation. A single “Practice Areas” page that lists every area of law usually ranks poorly for each of them. We also keep the word “specialist” off your pages unless a lawyer holds the certification your bar or law society recognizes.
Legal content written for E-E-A-T
Google's quality rater guidelines treat legal topics as “Your Money or Your Life” (YMYL), where the author's experience and expertise count for more. Blog articles answer your clients' real questions about timelines, steps, costs and options, citing the governing law. Each piece is reviewed by a lawyer at the firm, who can sign it, and goes through Google Docs for your approval before it is published. The content stays general information, clearly separate from legal advice on a matter.
Reviews, directories and firm authority
We help you get Google reviews without incentives or scripted wording, and help you answer them without confirming that anyone is a client. We earn editorial backlinks from legal publications, local media and the associations you belong to, with no purchased link networks. Those links build the authority that lets your practice area pages compete on the most contested searches.
Technical SEO, bilingual sites and AI search
Indexing, mobile speed, Core Web Vitals and structured data for a law firm come first, or the content hits a ceiling. For firms that serve clients in English and French, the two versions are connected with hreflang so Google shows each searcher the right language version. We also work on visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, the focus of our GEO agency.

Everything about lawyer SEO

What is lawyer SEO?
Lawyer SEO, also called law firm SEO or legal SEO, is the work that makes a firm's website and Business Profile appear when someone searches for a lawyer in their area of law and their city: practice area pages, local SEO, legal content, links and structured data. It differs from generic SEO in three ways: legal searches are often local and urgent, Google gives more weight to expertise on legal topics and professional conduct rules limit what a firm can claim.
Lawyer SEO and bar advertising rules
Law societies and state bars generally treat a firm's website as marketing, so we write it that way. In Ontario, Rule 4.2-1 of the Law Society's Rules of Professional Conduct requires marketing to be demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable, and Rule 4.3-1 reserves “specialist” for lawyers the Law Society has certified. In Quebec, section 145 of the Code of Professional Conduct of Lawyers bars a lawyer from using an endorsement or statement of gratitude in their advertising.
In the United States, ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communication about a lawyer's services, and its comments warn that reporting past results can create unjustified expectations. Each state adopts its own version of these rules. That is why no page we write promises an outcome, and why case results, when you choose to show them, come with the context your jurisdiction requires.
Our law firm SEO method in 4 steps
Understand your legal market
We look at which firms already rank in your practice areas and your city, what your site captures today and which keywords are missing. You leave this step with a list of real keyword searches, sized by volume and difficulty, not a 50-page audit you then have to hire someone else to carry out.
Prioritize the practice areas that pay
We rank keywords by value to the firm rather than by volume: a consultation search in family law is often worth more than several informational ones. We usually start with the most profitable practice area, measure it, then move on to the next. And if SEO isn't the best investment for your practice, we tell you.
Execute directly on your site
Our team works inside your law firm's WordPress, Wix or Webflow site: practice area pages, title tags and meta descriptions, internal linking, technical fixes and your Google Business Profile. Google Ads management is included in the mandate with no management fee, to bring in consultations while organic rankings build.
Measure and optimize every month
The monthly report tracks rankings and organic traffic in Search Console and Google Analytics, but the KPIs we discuss are calls, contact forms and qualified consultation requests by practice area. We adjust priorities based on what brings in signed cases. The mandate runs month to month with 30 days' notice and no long-term contract. Everything we've built stays yours.
How much does SEO for lawyers cost?
A law firm mandate usually runs between $2,000 and $3,000 per month. The price depends on the number of practice areas, the competition in your city and the state of your site at the start, not on a package grid. Google Ads management is included at no extra cost. Details are on our SEO pricing page.
Why choose our SEO agency for lawyers
SEO Montreal™ has worked with more than 500 clients in over 25 industries and focuses on organic search and GEO, with Google Ads in support. The mandate is monthly, with no long-term contract. The work is done on your site rather than in a report you have to get someone else to apply. We also work with other regulated professions, such as dentists and plastic surgeons. You can read about who does the work before you talk to us.
Lawyer SEO FAQ
It depends on the practice area, the competition and the city. A well-structured Business Profile can move up in the local pack within a few weeks. A practice area page targeting a competitive search like “divorce lawyer Toronto” often takes several months. We set realistic goals at the start and show you every month where rankings, organic traffic and consultation requests stand.
It can, when every claim is true, verifiable and not misleading. We write without promised outcomes or comparisons with other lawyers, keep the word “specialist” for certified lawyers and add the required context whenever past results appear. You approve every page before it is published and keep a copy: Quebec, for example, requires lawyers to retain a complete copy of every advertisement, in its original form, for 12 months.
Yes, as soon as that area is a real share of your caseload. Someone searching for an immigration lawyer wants a page about immigration, not a list of ten areas of law. Each page answers the starting question, explains the steps and invites a consultation. We start with the most profitable areas and add the others at the pace of the mandate.
Yes. Reviews feed popularity, one of the three factors Google names for local ranking, and they shape which firm a prospective client trusts. Answer each one without confirming the person is a client or referring to their case. Whether you can reuse reviews as testimonials on your own site depends on your jurisdiction. In Quebec, for example, section 145 bars endorsements in a lawyer's advertising.
Both: that is why Google Ads management is included in our mandates. Ads can generate consultation requests as soon as they go live and help test which messages and practice areas convert. Organic SEO builds visibility that keeps working when the ad budget stops.
Yes. We take on law firms anywhere in Canada or the United States, adapting the content to each province's law society or state bar rules. The work targets the cities where the firm actually has offices or clients, and each office gets its own Business Profile and, when demand justifies it, its own local practice area page.
Yes. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini for an employment lawyer in their city, the answer names a few firms and draws on sources such as their websites, directories, reviews and articles that mention them. A firm whose details are consistent everywhere and whose practice area pages answer clearly has a better chance of being cited.
Yes, by choosing its keywords. A solo practice rarely wins a broad search across a whole metro area, but it can rank for one practice area in its own city or neighborhood, where the local pack and a strong page matter more than the size of the firm. That is usually where our law firm SEO work starts, with a focused mandate.
