SEO Montreal is a cannabis SEO agency for licensed dispensaries and retailers, licensed producers and brands, legal cannabis e-commerce and delivery, CBD and hemp companies and accessory shops: local SEO, technical SEO, compliant content, earned links and AI search visibility.

Cannabis SEO case studies
Our published case studies are anonymous and cover several industries. One local business reached $30,000 in organic revenue per month, and one e-commerce site reached 360,400 visits per month. The same mechanics apply to cannabis SEO: pages that deserve the index, content that matches search intent and backlinks that build authority.

Our cannabis SEO services
Six areas of work, from the Google Business Profile of a licensed store to the compliance review every page goes through.
Local SEO for licensed dispensaries
Dispensary SEO is local SEO: searchers type “dispensary near me,” a neighborhood or a city name. We optimize each store’s Google Business Profile, build a location page per store, clean up citations and NAP data, and track map pack rankings. Multi-location retailers get a structure where each store targets its own area without competing with the next one.
Cannabis keyword research by market
Cannabis search demand depends on what is legal where the searcher lives: product categories, strains, edibles, delivery and store searches change from one province or state to the next. We map each keyword to its search intent and its market, and we leave out searches your license doesn’t let you serve.
Compliant cannabis content
Cannabis content sits close to “Your Money or Your Life” topics, where Google looks for E-E-A-T signals, and the law limits what it can say. We write informational category pages, product pages, store pages and educational guides without lifestyle imagery, testimonials or health claims. Every page goes to your compliance team for approval in Google Docs before it goes live.
Technical SEO, age gates and menus
An age gate has to screen young persons out without blocking Google’s crawler. We check how Google renders the gate, make menu platforms such as Dutchie or Jane indexable where they should be, fix canonical and indexation issues, add structured data and improve page speed and Core Web Vitals on mobile.
Cannabis link building and digital PR
Cannabis backlinks come from a small, closely watched pool of publishers, so each link has to add real authority. We earn links through digital PR, cannabis trade publications, local media and industry partnerships, and we audit existing links for penalty risk. Private blog networks and paid links that pass ranking credit are out: Google’s spam policies cover both.
AI search visibility for cannabis brands
Adults ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews which stores are open, what a product category is or how delivery works in their city. Clear, factual cannabis pages give those AI answers accurate information to cite, the focus of our GEO agency.

Everything about cannabis SEO

What is cannabis SEO?
Cannabis SEO, also called dispensary SEO or marijuana SEO, is search engine optimization for licensed dispensaries, cannabis brands, legal e-commerce and delivery services, CBD and hemp companies and accessory retailers. It uses the same foundations as any SEO, including technical work, content and backlinks, and adds work specific to cannabis: promotion laws, age gates, restricted advertising, local search for regulated stores and the closer E-E-A-T scrutiny health-adjacent content draws.
Why cannabis SEO is different
Paid ads are mostly closed to cannabis. Google Ads’ recreational drugs policy prohibits ads for substances that induce “highs,” with marijuana as an example, and for products marketed as facilitating drug use, such as pipes and bongs. The exceptions are narrow: topical, hemp-derived CBD with 0.3% THC or less, for advertisers certified through LegitScript that target California, Colorado and Puerto Rico only, and a Canada pilot on Search through December 31, 2026, restricted to Health Canada licensed producers and provincially or territorially authorized retailers. Meta prohibits ads for THC products as well, so organic search visibility carries most of the acquisition work.
The law adds a second layer. In Canada, the Cannabis Act prohibits most cannabis promotion and allows informational and brand-preference promotion only under strict conditions, so every page has to be written for compliance first. Our case studies by industry show how we work in other restricted niches.
Cannabis SEO by segment
Licensed dispensaries and retailers
Dispensaries win on local SEO. Beyond Google Business Profile and location pages, directories such as Weedmaps and Leafly send traffic in some markets, so we keep listings consistent with the website’s local SEO. Store pages state hours, address, age requirements and product availability in factual terms.
Licensed producers and cannabis brands
LPs and brands compete on brand searches, product categories and retailer lookups. We build brand pages around the informational and brand-preference promotion the law allows, such as how a product is grown or processed, and help adults find authorized retailers that carry it.
Cannabis e-commerce and delivery where legal
Online cannabis sales and delivery follow provincial and state rules, and only authorized retailers may sell. Where they are allowed, we apply our e-commerce SEO methods to category and product pages, faceted navigation and checkout, with age verification at the right steps.
CBD and hemp companies
In Canada, CBD falls under the Cannabis Act: only authorized retailers may sell it. In the United States, hemp-derived CBD follows federal and state rules that keep changing. Either way, CBD pages have to stay clear of health claims, which Health Canada treats as a compliance priority.
Accessories and head shops
In Canada, section 17 of the Cannabis Act covers cannabis accessories too, and Google Ads prohibits ads for pipes, bongs and other products marketed for drug use. We build category pages around product specifications, materials and use, with an age gate that search engines can crawl.
US state markets and MSOs
Each US state sets its own rules on cannabis advertising, age verification and delivery, and cannabis can’t legally cross state lines. For multi-state operators, we build state-level hubs and store-level pages, with content reviewed against each state’s rules.
Cannabis SEO and the Cannabis Act
Section 17 of the Cannabis Act prohibits promotion that could appeal to young persons, testimonials or endorsements, the depiction of a person, character or animal, and anything that evokes a way of life such as “glamour, recreation, excitement, vitality, risk or daring.” Authorized sellers may use informational and brand-preference promotion online where reasonable steps keep young persons from accessing it. Health Canada’s guide to promotion adds that steps youth can easily get around may require more, and gives “a cannabis brand website featuring testimonials of their products by consumers” as a prohibited example, so product reviews need a decision with your legal team. Section 23 also prohibits publishing a prohibited promotion on behalf of another person. We write to these rules and leave the final sign-off to your compliance team.
Our cannabis SEO method in 4 steps
Understand your market and license
We review where your license lets you sell, which dispensaries and cannabis brands rank in those markets, the organic traffic your site captures today and the keywords it’s missing. You get a keyword research plan by market, which our team then executes.
Prioritize the pages that drive sales
We rank keywords by revenue potential rather than volume: a store page for a city or a product category often matters more than a large informational search. We start with the pages that drive store visits and online sales, measure their traffic and conversions, then move to the next set.
Execute directly on your platform
Our team works in your CMS, your menu platform or with your developers: store and category pages, product pages, title tags, internal links, structured data, sitemaps and technical SEO fixes. Content goes through Google Docs for your approval before it goes live.
Measure rankings, visits and revenue monthly
The monthly report tracks rankings, organic traffic and Google Business Profile actions in Search Console, Google Analytics and GBP insights, but the KPIs we discuss are store visits, online orders and revenue from organic search. The mandate renews monthly with 30 days’ notice and no long-term contract. Everything we’ve built stays yours.
How much do cannabis SEO services cost?
Cannabis is a restricted and competitive niche. A cannabis SEO mandate starts at $3,000 per month. The monthly cost depends on the number of stores and markets, the size of the product catalog, the competition and the state of the site at the start, not on a package grid. Google Ads campaign management is included with no management fee wherever the policy allows the ads, such as the Canada pilot or certified CBD topicals. Details are on our SEO pricing page.
Why choose our cannabis SEO agency
Our team has worked with more than 500 clients in over 25 industries and focuses on organic search and GEO, with Google Ads in support where policy allows. We already work in other restricted verticals, such as casino SEO and adult websites, where advertising is limited and content draws closer scrutiny from Google. The mandate is monthly and our SEO team executes directly on your platform, in English and French, for Canada and US states. Meet our team before we talk.
Cannabis SEO FAQ
It depends on the market, the competition and the state of the site. Technical fixes and Google Business Profile work can move local rankings within weeks. A new brand facing crowded search results often needs several months before its category pages compete. We set realistic goals at the start and show you every month where rankings, organic traffic, store visits and online orders stand.
A dispensary can compete there. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes links and reviews. We work on the Google Business Profile, citations, compliant review requests and backlinks, while distance to the searcher is fixed. Each dispensary location gets its own profile and location page so it competes in its own neighborhood.
It can be, when the content follows the Act. Authorized sellers may use informational and brand-preference promotion online where reasonable steps keep young persons from accessing it. Testimonials, lifestyle imagery, content appealing to youth and health claims stay out. Your legal team confirms the framework, and every page goes through your compliance review before publication.
Rarely. Google Ads prohibits ads for marijuana and for products that facilitate drug use, such as pipes. The exceptions are topical hemp-derived CBD with 0.3% THC or less, for LegitScript-certified advertisers in California, Colorado and Puerto Rico, and a Canada Search pilot through 2026 for Health Canada licensed producers and authorized retailers. Where your business qualifies, campaign management is included with no management fee.
An age gate can block Google if it hides content behind a script or redirect the crawler can’t pass. We test how Google renders the gated pages, keep age verification in place for visitors and make sure the content behind it stays crawlable and indexed. Snippets show without the gate, so your legal team sets the gate and what indexed text says.
Yes. CBD and hemp brands need product pages, educational guides and category pages built for search, with no health claims. In Canada, CBD follows the Cannabis Act like other cannabis products. In the United States, federal and state hemp rules keep changing, so your legal team confirms what you can sell and ship before we plan content.
No. Google’s spam policies cover link schemes and paid links that pass ranking credit, and Google gives cannabis sites close scrutiny. We earn backlinks through digital PR, cannabis trade publications, local media and industry partnerships, and we audit existing links for spam risk.
On three levels. Visibility: rankings and map pack positions in Search Console and local tracking. Traffic: organic sessions, landing pages and Google Business Profile actions. Business: store visits, online orders and revenue attributed to organic search, the KPIs in every monthly report. Cannabis SEO is judged on sales, not traffic alone.
